Dash of Magic: A Bliss Novel

Buy this book!

by Kathryn Littlewood

This second book in the acclaimed Bliss trilogy mixes the down-home heart-punch of Ingrid Law's Newbery Honor Book Savvy, the always-on-the-edge-of-chaos comedy of Cheaper by the Dozen, and a humorous magic all its own to create a thoroughly original confection to please every reader's sweet tooth!
The Bliss family's magical Cookery Booke was stolen by evil Aunt Lily at the end of Bliss, the first novel in the series. Now twelve-year-old Rosemary has a chance to win it back: she challenges her aunt to an Iron Chef-style international baking competition in Paris. But the only way to beat the cheating Aunt Lily is to gather magical ingredients of her own. Together with her brothers and their talking cat and mouse, Rose races across Paris—from the Eiffel Tower to the Cathedral of Notre Dame to the Mona Lisa in the Louvre Museum—to gather what she needs to out-bake—and out-magic—her conniving aunt.
If Rose wins, the cherished Cookery Booke will return to her family where it belongs. If she loses—well, the consequences are too ugly to think about. . . .

  1. I just finished the book and I loved it! I think that it was better than the first book, but if we didn't read the first book we wouldn't understand it. I liked all the new characters and loved all of the action. My favorite new character was Jacques, because all of his confidence and bravery. I also liked the shrunken man, because he was defeated in the end along .with "Aunt Lily" or Lily Le Fay. I hope the author makes another book with the Bliss kids, Purdy, Albert, Grandpa Balthazar, Gus, Jaques, the shrunken man, and Aunt Lily.

    1. I agree with Avyn and think it was better than the first one because it had more action and more characters. The more characters there are in a book the more complicated the book becomes. I like books better when they are complicated because it keeps you on your toes. The book was more suspenseful and that also keeps you on your toes. For example, when Lily's midget went to steel the book back but he took the fake book book that Rose had found in her bookshelf. I really liked this book.

  2. I thought A Dash of Magic was an excellent book; I even liked it better than the first one. I especially liked how Rose beat her Aunt Lily in the baking competition. I had a feeling Rose would. I also liked that there were new characters in this book, like grandpa Balthazar, Gus, Jaques, and the shrunken man. I found that it made the book more interesting than the first.

  3. There were so many great things about this book; but if I had to pick one, it would be how you could never predict what was going to happen. For example, in the book there was a cooking contest and there was a theme of what you were going to cook. Every chef had a day to think about what they were going to make. Then the judge made many twists and turns, that made you want to read more. The book was full of action that you were always thinking about. I wasn't able to put the book down. I would definitely recommend this book to other kids.
