The Running Dream

by Wendein Van Draanen

Jessica thinks her life is over when she loses a leg in a car accident. She's not comforted by the news that she'll be able to walk with the help of a prosthetic leg. Who cares about walking when you live to run?

As she struggles to cope with crutches and a first cyborg-like prosthetic, Jessica feels oddly both in the spotlight and invisible. People who don't know what to say, act like she's not there. Which she could handle better if she weren't now keenly aware that she'd done the same thing herself to a girl with CP named Rosa. A girl who is going to tutor her through all the math she's missed. A girl who sees right into the heart of her.

With the support of family, friends, a coach, and her track teammates, Jessica may actually be able to run again. But that's not enough for her now. She doesn't just want to cross finish lines herself—she wants to take Rosa with her.

  1. The Running Dream by Wendein Van Draanen is a book that touched my heart. A girl named Jessica unfortunately loses her leg in an accident. She was a big time runner and now she thinks that she will never be able to run again. With the support of her family, track members, and best friend, she was able to bounce back. This book made me realize that you have to keep pushing to get through the hard times. No matter what obstacle is in your way, keep going and eventually the problem will be gone. The Running Dream also taught me that you should see a person as them and not their disability. If someone has lost a limb or eyesight or anything, you shouldn't judge. This book is a great one and if you have a chance, definitely read it.

  2. The Running Dream by Wendein Van Draanen was about a girl named Jessica who looses part of her leg in a car accident. Jessica loves to run more than anything so this was very tragic for her. Running makes her feel free she says. When Jessica and her track team find out that there is a fake leg designed for running, they all help raise money with car washes and bake sales to help her buy the leg. This book is great for all ages and I think everyone should read it.

  3. The Running Dream was such an inspiring book to read. When a runner named Jessica gets in a car accident and loses a leg, she believes that she will never be able to run again. Jessica's whole family is having trouble paying for insurance and her medical bills,so her track team has a brilliant idea of starting a fundraiser. With all of the help from the fundraiser Jessica is able to get a prosthetic leg. Because of the prosthetic leg Jessica is able to run again.
While Jessica didn't have her fake leg, she was sent to sit in the handicapped area of the classroom in school. When sitting there she met a girl named Rosa who sat in a wheelchair. All Rosa wanted to have was people see her from the inside, not what they saw on the outside. The two girls would sit in the back of the room passing notes to each other during class. These notes included why Jessica enjoyed running, and how Rosa wanted to run but couldn't because she was born with a disease that made her unable to function with her legs.
When Jessica got her prosthetic leg, she was determined to help Rosa feel what it was like to run. So, when the yearly 10 mile race that went around their hometown took place Jessica decided that she would enter Rosa and herself, and push Rosa around in her wheelchair so she could feel what it was like with the cold wind up against her face, and overall the movement. Jessica worked so hard to make Rosa's dream come true, and when she finally did everyone was so happy.
This book taught me that determination defeats all, and that no matter the obstacle you can still win. Everyone should read this book, and overall it teaches a great lesson!
