Crash

Jerry Spinelli

Our summer is off to a great start.  We are really looking forward to our next book, Crash by Jerry Spinelli.  Crash is a character we can all relate to.  He is big and athletic, has a strong personality and likes to push people around.  But is there more to Crash than there appears to be?  Are there things bothering Crash?  Do you think you could be friends with Crash?  Talk to us and let us know what you think.

  1. I'm almost done with the book and so far I really like it. One thing I like is how Penn Webb is influencing the other characters, especially Crash. In the beginning of the book Crash is mean to Penn and bullies him. Penn doesn't care what other people think of him, and no matter what anyone says or does he won't change who he is. This changes Crash because he realizes Penn is a better influence on him than his other friends. I predict that in the end of the book Crash and Penn will become good friends.

  3. There has been a lot of suspense at each chapter and that is part of why I like it so much. I would totally recommend this book to others at this point.

  4. I just finished the book and I really liked it and would definitely recommend it. Crash was judging Penn on his looks and assumed he was nerdy. This is something people do unconsciously all the time. Crash learned a lot about friendship during the 7th grade. I am so thankful for all of my friends and for all the friends I'll make in the future.

  5. I am reading this book with my bookworm buddy(Hannah) and her brother, Mark. We are only in the beginning of the book and we DO NOT like the way Crash bullies Penn. We cannot relate to his thinking at all, and can not imagine why anyone would ever behave this way. I know Mr. Spinelli has a few tricks up his sleeve to keep us engaged and wanting more. I predict that Penn will have a good influence on Crash and that he will change for the better. Right now though, we have never run across anyone like Crash in real life -- and we hope we never do.

  6. I just finished the book and I loved it, I would definitely recommend this book to other's if they ask. I have to agree with Maggie about how their was a lot suspense in each chapter. The suspense is the reason I could not but the book down. The book discusses a relationship between a kid and his bully. The bully ends up being someone that turns out to be his best friend in the end.

I am thankful about how I have such cool friends.

  7. The part where scooter gets sent to the hospital was such a twist, and it reminded me of one of the books we read, Because of Mr. Terupt

  8. I only have 56 pages left, even though I started the book yesterday. I have to admit, I am really enjoyed this book, even though I thought it was going to be super easy. Jerry Spinelli is now in my top three favorite authors, along with his book which is in my top 3 books and series. I hope we are lucky enough to be able to read another one of Mr. Spinelli's books.

  9. At the beginning of the book, I thought of Crash as a jerky tough guy, with a big mouth who gets humor from tearing up other people's self esteem. He thought he was the greatest thing that ever walked the planet, so he thought he had the right to torment whoever he wanted,Then as I read more of the story, I realized that he was starting to evolve in to a nicer character, who was more mature and wise.
Some parts of this story really reminded me of other stories I have seen, heard, read or even been through myself. The first connection I had was a text-to-text connection with Because of Mr. Terupt. The part where Scooter had the "incident" reminded me of the big fall in Because of Mr. Terupt. One of my other connections was to a TV show, 30 for 30. The episode was about the life story of Herschel Walker, one of the world's best track runner, AND one of the best football athletes that ever lived. This little detail shot at me like a bullet because Crash was the best at both sports to, and it is very uncommon for a big, strong person to be fast too, but they both were. My last connection was to Penn because I know how tempting it can be sometimes when you're a vegetarian.
This book impacted me a lot, especially the character Penn, because I thought he was REALLY the toughest one of all. He stood by kind, and caring while almost the whole school picked on him and tormented him. His toughness finally rubbed onto Crash, or in other words changed Crash into someone better.

  10. I liked this book and would recommend reading it, but I didn't really connect to it a lot. I just can't imagine anyone being as mean as Crash.

I thought Penn was a nice kid who was also a little nerdy. I think Crash judged Penn when he first saw him just because of the way he looked. Crash thought he was just to weird to be his friend. On the other hand Crash's sister Abby liked Penn right away. She didn't care that he looked and acted differently.
I did make a few connections. I know kids at school that are weird but are nice (like Penn) but I would never think of being mean to them. Another connection would be that Penn reminded of August in Wonder because people judged him too because of his face.
In the end, Crash changed his mind about Penn. Something about Crash's grandfather's stroke made him realize that he and Penn had more in common than he thought. I hoped this would happen and it did! I was happy Crash stopped acting so mean.

  11. This my 5th time reading this book. I am still loving every word of it. This teaches you to never judge a person by his first impression like Crash did. After his grandpa had his stroke he realized what he was doing to Penn was mean and rude. by doing this is changing his life. This book teaches you a very important lesson that every one should know and follow.
