That Summer

by Sarah Dessen

As far as Haven is concerned, there’s just too much going on.
Everything is changing, and she’s not sure where she fits in.
Then her sister’s old boyfriend shows up, sparking memories of the summer when they were all happy and everything was perfect. . . .
But along the way, Haven realizes that sometimes change is a good thing.

  1. The book That Summer was a great book. I loved the story because in the end there was a huge twist. The whole time I was sure Sumner and Haven would end up together in the end. However, after Sumner rose his voice to her and she ran off I wasn't so sure any more. With Ashley getting married and the parents getting divorced, Haven felt very alone. Since she felt so lonley she needed someone to be there for her. In the end, when Ashley finally told Haven what happened between Sumner and her, Haven understood. Haven never knew and always blamed Ashley for leaving Sumner. This book was amazing and I recommend it to everyone.

  2. In the book Summer by Sarah Dessen, a fifteen-year-old girl named Haven has a lot going on. Her dad is getting remarried to a much younger woman, her sister is getting married, and her mother is making new friends and having fun. Haven is the only one who doesn’t seem to be changing. The fifteen-year-old should be the one changing all the time and figuring out life, but instead, her parents are the ones changing, and Haven has trouble dealing with all of it. One day she runs into Sumner, who was her sister’s twenty-year-old ex-boyfriend. Haven runs into Sumner repeatedly and she’s able to talk to him about what’s going on in her life. Since her parents are busy, her best friend is too busy obsessing over her long-distance boyfriend, and her sister is snappy from wedding planning, Sumner is really her only friend. At the end though, Sumner wasn't all that great and it surprised me. I would have thought that this book would have had a hard beginning and a happy ending. If I was Haven I don't know how I would react to Sumner's behavior.

At the end Sumner turned to a nasty person . I thought it was happily ever after, but not in this book. Overall, I thought it was a great book.

  4. The book That Summer by Sarah Dessen, was very interesting to read. I feel like I could relate to many things, however a lot of the situations were about things that might happen later on in my life. Haven is 15 yrs. old and has a lot going on in her life. For example, her parents just got divorced, and her sister is getting married. Also, on top of that, she doesn’t always get along with Ashley, her sister.
I feel like I could relate to the fact that Haven and her sister didn’t get along because sometimes I don’t get along with my sister. Although I feel like we are getting closer as we get older, just like Haven and Ashley.
I also think that Sarah Dessen was trying to help young girls, like me, understand that things aren’t always as they seem, and that you should make the effort to see all perspectives of the situation before you get upset about something. Many times, people will get angry at someone because they think they’re being treated unfairly when that’s not the case at all.
That Summer made me realize that I’m lucky to not be going through all of the changes that Haven had to go through! I’m not sure I would be ready to handle all those emotions yet. I do think that after reading the book I’d be better at coping when things don’t go as planned.
